The Twelve Days Of Christmas…Writing Clichés

Recently I found myself wondering why there were no Christmas songs specifically about writers. Writers make Christmas, I thought. Without the retold old stories and the cynically commercial new song lyrics and the eye-wateringly predictable movie screenplays and the somewhat jaded newspaper articles that accompany the season, there would be no season, goshdarnit.

Poor writers! I thought, briefly scratching my head as it became infected with ancient Christmas music I was only subconsciously aware of on the radio. Someone should do something about that, I mused. Someone should put something together that’s festive, and puts writers front and centre.

Well, I’m over at Anne R. Allen’s blog today, doing just that. Anne’s blog is a mighty and awesome resource, regularly cited as one of the top websites for writers in the world.

It’s full of the most sensible and sane writing advice you’ll find and loved by multitudes. So when she asked me to write a guest post for her earlier this year, I was so excited and grateful I roared “YAY CHRISTMAS!!” out loud, startling a young mother on the street nearby and occasioning her baby to drop his ice-cream and start to cry, which is a pretty awful thing to do on one of the few sunny summer days of the year in Ireland.

Nevertheless, the fact remains that Anne has very kindly let me loose on her blog today – see here – and so you’ll find me there reworking an old classic – “The Twelve Days of Christmas”.
